Position Overview:

The Conservation Program Coordinator is a full time position based out of the La Crosse, WI headquarters with travel throughout Wisconsin, as well as occasional trips to visit crews in Michigan and Indiana.  During the field season will be responsible for supervising and supporting Crew Leaders in the field, as well as for administrative, logistical, and personnel support for 8-10 field crews.  In the off season you will assist with the recruiting, interviewing and hiring of up to 160 crew members annually.

You will work with each individual Crew Leader to ensure crew safety, high quality work, positive crew community, a strong crew work ethic, and the personal development of each Crew Member, among other responsibilities.  The position duties are 60% field and 40% office and you must be comfortable with hard work and long days (including nights/weekends) in tough conditions as well as with extensive travel/overnights required throughout the course of the field season.

 

About WisCorps:

WisCorps is a 501(c)(3) non-profit conservation corps that provides a valuable service to local communities and the environment by engaging youth and young adults in direct conservation and community revitalization projects across the state of Wisconsin and the Upper Midwest.

Conservation Program Coordinator Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and support 10-15 seasonal Crew Leaders annually
  • Work with the Conservation Manager to support 2-3 field assistants annually
  • Work closely with project sponsors to ensure proper completion of project goals
  • Complete a minimum of 1 site visit per crew per week
  • Complete a minimum of 1 overnight visit per crew per session
  • Evaluate Crew Leaders and give both formal and informal feedback
  • Participate in recruitment events for Crew Leaders and Corps Members
  • Assist with the recruiting, interviewing and hiring of up to 160 crew members annually
  • Participate in interview and selection process for Crew Leaders
  • Manage crew logistics, including tools, camping equipment, and other gear
  • Repair tools and equipment including chainsaws, trailers, and other gear
  • On-site coordination of Crew Leader trainings which will require multiple over nights
  • Work with the Conservation Manager and Operations Director to develop trainings, systems and programs for WisCorps
  • Other duties and responsibilities may be necessary from time to time

Conservation Program Coordinator Qualifications:

  • Extensive outdoor leadership experience with youth and young adults
  • Experience with conservation corps programming
  • Proficient in trailbuilding techniques, carpentry, and stonework
  • Experience in backcounty living
  • Highly self-motivated, hard-working, confident autonomous
  • Proficient communication skills
  • Relishes rugged living conditions
  • Good driving record and a valid driver’s license
  • Ready to undergo a criminal history check
